What You’ll Learn

  • Alignment is not the end, but rather the means.

In our posture labs you will learn the structure of the major foundational poses.  Drawing from classical methods, you will learn effective instruction points, common modifications and develop an understanding how “families” of poses are related.

You won’t memorize all the bones in the foot, but you will learn the major musculoskeletal and neurological systems of the body. Using experiential learning, you will gain knowledge of functional anatomy and how the body works in movement.

The techniques needed for advanced poses are learned in the simplest asana.  When the systems are understood, alignment is a path to freedom!

  • The secret of becoming an inspirational teacher, is discovering and learning to trust your own voice.

You will learn time tested methods of classroom management, how to handle student and studio issues, and how to teach yoga instead of leading a sequencing.

You will define your values as a teacher, and practice expressing them effectively.

  • The physical body is only the beginning.

Learn the power of the breath and classical pranayama practices.

Beyond the organic body, what is the subtle or energetic body from a yogic perspective.

You will learn the importance of slowing down, and how to bring restorative elements into your vinyasa classes.

Mysticism is a powerful tool for understand and exploration- dive deep into stillness.

  • When you know the notes to sing….

There are reliable, repeatable methods for creating unforgettable classes that will challenge and inspire your students. We will share them all with you.

Using a flexible template you will learn to create safe, challenging and flexible sequences that adapt to the students you have.

From a peak pose, to the most esoteric philosophical idea, you will learn how to infuse your sequences with meaning beyond the poses.

  • Who has the right to teach yoga?

How did we get from meditative practices in ancient India to Hot Power Flow in Boston in 2026 and how do we honor the roots of the practices while bringing awareness to cultural appropriation?

These are important questions to answer as yoga teacher in the west.

By learning about the lineage and the historical context of yoga, you will begin to see where modern postural yoga fits into the vast tapestry of yoga.

By understanding and respecting yoga origins, we can teach the kind of yoga that is in demand today, without erasing the past.

  • From theory to action!

Yoga philosophy is not separate from the practice, but rather inextricably woven through every pose.

Explore the 8 Limbed Path as enumerated in the Yoga Sutras, and see how the principles contained within are universal wisdom that can help you shape your classes, and your experience of being human.

You will look at other foundational yoga texts, and gain an understanding of the major tenets underlying the practice.

Contextualizing the physical in the realm of the philosophical is where transformation occurs!

  • But, is this a real job?

We can’t guarantee a yoga journal cover, but we can prepare you for being a yoga professional in today’s market.

From the realities of being a teacher, to the finances of operating studio, we will share transparently the state of the business today.

You will learn from a faculty with proven track records on how to create your “brand” and raise your digital profile.  Build a sustainable income with a mix of revenue streams to help you succeed in a competitive market.

Far beyond the training, you will have access to your teachers if you decide to build a yoga career.

  • Yoga is political.

The wellness industry at large has some big challenges when it comes to equity in yoga spaces. Spiritual bypassing, whitewashing, ableism and racism have and continue to impact the industry. Social justice principle and yoga are linked. Explore privilege and representation in yoga spaces,

Throughout the training, you will look at how identity shapes your teaching and your students.

With dedicated units on racial equity, ethics and body diversity, begin to explore how you can individually and collectively create change.

BIPOC Scholarships

Boston Yoga Union is committed to increasing representation of BIPOC teachers and students in yoga spaces. We encourage diverse students with an interest in teaching to apply for a studio-sponsored scholarship to defray teacher training tuition.

Scholarships are granted on a rolling basis, and are tiered levels of cost sharing as a percentage of the training. We have modeled our program this way in order to grant as many students as possible support for the training.

If you identify as BIPOC and would like to apply for a 2025/2026 scholarship, please do so here!
