Intro to Shadow Yoga

  • Boston Yoga Union Coolidge 1297 Beacon Street Brookline, MA, 02446 United States (map)

Join J. for a workshop introducing you to Shadow Yoga, a style of hatha yoga which utilizes rhythmic breathing, kriya, bandha coordination, and the system of vital energetic junctions referred to as marma.

Shadow Yoga consists of circular and spiraling movements, warrior stances, and sun salutation forms that prepare students to safely and effectively practice the more advanced limbs of hatha yoga known as pranayama, pratyahara, dharna, dhyana and samadhi.

In the morning, you will be taught the Shadow Yoga warm-up which includes joint rotations (Dasa Chalana,) self-churning (Jiva Chalana,) and vais̅aka (a yin horse stance.) Depending upon the ability of practitioners present, some of the first prelude form Balakrama (Stepping into Strength) may be demonstrated and practiced. In the afternoon, we will open with a discussion about the morning practice and go through the seated joint rotations and some meditative asanas.

Sundernath and Emma Balnaves will be visiting Boston the following week to teach a Shadow Yoga intensive course should you choose to continue your studies after this workshop.
