This workshop takes us deep into the practice and philosophy behind J. Brown’s slow and strong, powerfully intimate, breath-centered therapeutic yoga teaching. Inspired by the T Krishnamacharya (“the teacher of teachers”) and TKV Desikachar tradition, J has codified 20+ years of teaching experience into a singularly healing yoga practice that adapts to individual needs.
This is J’s signature offering that he has given to thousands of teachers and students around the world. His approach emphasizes breath before poses, simplicity and attention over striving and achievement, and is geared towards reducing stress and a lessening of pain.
The sessions will consist of both a short lecture/discussion and a practice. It is suitable for any level of experience or physical ability, including chronic or acute conditions.
Take one or all three sessions:
Gentle is the New Advanced - Saturday, November 8th at 11:00AM-1:30PM
Let's come together. To ease our pain, to feel some inner peace, and to summon the strength and courage to overcome the obstacles that lay before us. Utilizing simple breath-centered practice to embody our intentions, and enjoying the supportive atmosphere of friendship and shared inquiry, we will foster transformation and resilience.
In this workshop, J. Brown brings his 25+ years of teaching experience in a personalized therapeutic approach that adapts to individual needs, and his knack for creating open communication developed through his industry leading podcast, J. Brown Yoga Talks, to facilitate a co-creative ritual of healing and spirit.
This is an opportunity for both those who have never met J before to be introduced to new possibilities, and for old friends to catch up and compare notes. No previous experience is required. All are welcome.
Yoga for Pain - Saturday, November 8th at 2:30PM-5:00PM
Yoga practices can be used for different purposes. Some people use practice for fitness. Some people are looking for transcendence. But, more and more, people are coming to yoga to address their pain. It could be either physical or mental pain, usually both.
The way yoga practice helps us address pain is not the same way we might practice for other purposes. Many conventional approaches unsuccessfully attempt to do both and often leave students ill equipped to develop effective personal practice that meets their needs.
In this workshop, J will examine the distinguishing characteristics of yoga practice that is geared towards a lessening of pain and developing individual agency. We will identify both the technical and philosophical aspects that determine both the experience we have, and results we receive.
Developing a Strong Spiritual Core - Sunday, November 9th at 11:00AM-1:30PM
The latest neuroscience research shows that people with a strong "spiritual core" experience less anxiety and depression than those that don't. But what do we mean by a "strong spiritual core?" And how does yoga help someone develop it?
You'll often hear people say that yoga is "spiritual but not religious." Yet, it's not always clear what distinguishes one from the other or what either has to do with a breathing and moving practice.
In this workshop, J. Brown will offer simple practice and facilitate discussion around different philosophical viewpoints and the notion of a higher power in the context of yoga. This will include the relationship between meditation and prayer, soul and creator, intuition, and ways in which we might develop receptivity and direction.
Price: $75 per session or $200 for the full weekend
